BJP releases third list of candidates for Lok Sabha election 2019: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has so far released three lists of 221 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls which will be held in seven phases between April 11 and May 19, 2019. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek re-election from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, BJP president Amit Shah will fight from Gandhinagar constituency, replacing LK Advani. The Gandhinagar parliamentary seat has been BJP’s stronghold since 1989. The party has given a ticket to its spokesperson Sambit Patra from Puri Lok Sabha seat in Odisha.

The party has once again fielded Union Minister Smriti Irani against Congress president Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. During the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Irani had given a tough fight to Rahul. The margin between the winning the candidate (Rahul) and the first runner up (Irani) was just 1.08 lakh voters. In 2009, Rahul had won from here with a margin of nearly 3 lakh votes.

Earlier, the party announced its list of 123 candidates for the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and 54 candidates (out of 60) for the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections. The two states will go to polls simultaneously with the general elections.
The BJP is facing an uphill task amid expectations of a repeat of its 2014 performance. The party is contesting elections under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and seeking second term in office by highlighting the works done by the government in last five years.
In 2014, the BJP had secured absolute majority on its won, winning 283 seats. The NDA had won 336 seats in 543 members Lok Sabha.
The elections to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha will begin from April 11 and culminate on May 19. Results will be declared on May 23. The tenure of 16th Lok Sabha ends on June 3.
